The snow returned just before Halloween (26/10) here in the Alps. So while pumpkins were still being carved and scary outfits being created, what was left of the greens, browns and yellows that thrilled the senses for a month or so, having now been instantly and silently expunged. By contrast the new canvas is monotonal, soft focussed and fundamentally calm.

Of course it’ll be another whole month before the lifts start to take passengers up into paradise again, but fortunately I enjoy a carbon neutral pursuit of thrills. With a plentiful early supply of powder over the entire region, I have been up for a couple of morning searches and found plenty to carve. It’s fun to extend what is already a long winter sports season, from November to May, and also squeeze October into that window.
To enjoy this deserted, un-groomed ski area as if it were your own private resort when nature delivers, all you need are the skills and the desire to unlock its bounty.
